Fistful of Frags Updates
While the news is a little old, the team at Fistful of Frags has posted two new updates for its Western themed HL2 mod. And since they haven't been posted here on HLF, its better late than never.

The first is the 1.5 update. There are a large number of changes and fixes in this update such as modified animations, new weapon balancing stats, and two new maps. Follow this link to their site to get the update. Various servers and files are available.

The second update, while a little more specific is equally important for those who run a FoF server. So, if you're in that group, head here to make sure your players are treated to the best and current version of the Fistful of Frags experience.

Fortress Forever '2fort' Teaser
Fortress Forever has released their second update in as many days. This new video update shows their rendition of the classic Team Fortress map '2fort'. The map is set to be released with version 2.1 of the popular mod. Cue silly music!

The big question remains though: is it as catchy as the Team Fortress 2 Bob the Builder video? You be the judge!

Grayshot Mod Gets Cunning With Viral Websites
Everyone's favourite mod for cunning marketing ploys; Grayshot, has released a series of 'Viral Sites' around the storyline of the modification. Grayshot is a mod with a storyline similar to that of the 2008 film Cloverfield.

Viral sites are generally unheard of when it comes to Half-Life modifications, so the Grayshot one's are an interesting look into an idea not often applied to modifications. The full lowdown on the specific viral sites can be found below. Be warned though, some of them are unintentionally quite hilarious.

  • Professor Carmichael's Blog: Michael Carmichael is a Professor at Oxford University. His blog documents his study of the 'organism' he has found. For all the wrong reasons, the abusive voice mail message left for the Professor is particularly comedic. As someone who lives in Oxford, I must however point out the major error of them continually stating there is a 'threat to the entire campus'; there is no central campus for Oxford University!
  • Ian Taggart's Blog: A psychic gives premonitions that something 'arises. From the ground. A horrific sight.' on the 30th of November. Funnily enough, this also happens to be when Grayshot is released. It is also the anniversery of the release of the Michael Jackson hit "Thriller", so the premonition could well simply be the vision of a re-release.
  • Who Is Lawrence Tibbins?: Lawrence Tibbins is the 'leader of the anti-grayshot faction'. His blog reaches out to other anti-Grayshot sympathisers, by use of evidence. The highlight is probably one of the bad guys leaving him a video message declaring how dumb he is, and how he's basically going down.
  • New Jersey 5 News: A news website based in an area where there is a quarantine due to a release of the 'organism'. This blog should be noted for the declaration that Lawrence Tibbins is an enemy of the state and is in fact the Golden Globe winning actor from Fantastic Four and The Shield; Michael Chiklis.

  • Strategic Combat- Combat is based on an attack, block and parry system. Typically, attacking is accomplished by holding down primary fire and releasing when the player wishes. This enables the player to make slow, more powerful timed attacks, or flurries of quick attacks. Most attacks can be made in 4 directions, from the left, right, overhead and thrusting positions. Attack speed is determined too, by what weapon the player is wielding. Typically, secondary fire is reserved for blocking. You can block with a shield, or weapon if timed right. Blocking is also done in four directions and a player may counterattack after a perfect parry. This style of system makes swordplay and combat much more interesting and strategic for players.
  • Special Abilities- There are special abilities unique to certain classes. Take for example the Berserker who can, at anytime when his special bar is full, go berserk by activating the special function key.
  • Unique Weapons- We have tried to stretch the limits of imagination within reason to come up with weapon combinations historically viable & unique, but also that would enrich game play and the players experience.
  • Healers- The addition of Healers for each team makes game play further diverse, giving a dying player a chance to rejoin battle.
  • Lord Classes- The addition of Lord Classes with musical instruments is a combination of a Team Leader and Musician as they would have in historical armies. In this case, the Lords are the musicians, and when they play their instruments, each team receives bonuses for all of those that stand within a certain radius or earshot of that instrument while being played. For each team it behaves differently. This also helps promote team cohesion and to move about tightly in some cases. For a more detailed explanation of this see the Weapons section under Jarl, Captain, and Lord.
  • Diverse Game Modes- We have planned out a diverse array of game modes so the player doesn't have to keep playing through the same scenario each time. Here are a few Examples:

    Team Deathmatch
    Booty
    Booty Tag
    Territory
    Pillage
    Siege
    Slay the Dragon
    Assassination
    Capture the Flag

  • Beautiful Maps- The maps will range from Realistic European countrysides, Scandanavian Villiages, Harbors and Ship Ports, Castles, Keeps, Catacombs, Winter Landscapes, & Forests, to some not necessarily realistic maps, but fun nonetheless.

Eternal Silence: Post Mortem Report
Eternal Silence Project Leader Dan Menard has put pen to paper on an article for IGN's Mod Center. The detailed article is an interesting read for any follower of the Half-Life 2 modification scene, as Dan looks back at the five years of development so far for Eternal Silence.
Some of our mistakes are pretty public, like the horrendous lag we had in our first release. It's turned a lot of people off... I can assure everyone it's gone now. It's been interesting to see how long people keep a memory of a buggy game. A lot of people who tried 1.0 only came back for 3.0 (even then, some avoided it). We really couldn't do anything to prevent the lag. In truth we had only tested with 12 players before releasing. Lesson learnt: Test with a full server before every public release.
You can read the rest of the 'Post Mortem' at this most handy of links. If you've yet to try Eternal Silence out yet, then I'd highly recommend visiting our Downloads Area for the mod.
